March Madness!

Wow!  It has been a while since my last post but I can guarantee it has been busy, busy, busy in room 4!  Here is a quick rundown of what we have been learning and doing this month:

SHARED READING:  We are finishing up a unit on "Then and Now."  We have been talking about how things are different today from back then. The kids were a little shocked to find out a telephone used to be attached to a wall with a cord!!!!  In social studies we have been talking about how schools are different from back then and today.

OG/WORD WORK:  We are really working on using what we know about sounds and spelling patterns to become better spellers.  The patterns are getting trickier!  After break we will review ai/ay words.

WRITING:  I am so proud of the hard work the kids did on their animal research and habitat project!  It was a long process to get to the finished project, but they did it!  Thanks to everyone for coming to our habitat presentations last week!  After break we will begin a unit on opinion writing.

LEADERSHIP:  We are currently working on Habit 6:  Synergize.  We have watched videos, read books, and done a variety of activities to show how working together is better!  We had a great time this week with our buddies from Mrs. Nilo's class practicing Habit 6.  The kids formed a circle and they had to get a hula hoop around the circle without letting go of their hands.  They worked together to figure it out!  They also did an activity called "The Human Pretzel." That was a little trickier to figure out.

MATH:  In 1st grade math we are working on counting money, making exchanges, counting change, telling time to the hour and half hour, showing lines of symmetry, place value and more.
We are currently working on a unit on fractions.  We will finish up our unit after break.

Check out our pictures from our habitats and leadership time with our buddies!

A Busy February

Well...I can't believe February is gone! Being sick for the first week really threw me off.  The kids have been hard at work.  Here are a few things we  have been working on this month:

  • Animal Research
  • Reviewing how to write a paragraph
  • Compound words
  • Synonyms/Antonyms
  • Partner reading/reading response sheets
  • Rabbit and Reptile Words (multi-syllable words)
  • Words with -oi, -oy, -ar

In 1st grade math we have been working on:
  • Counting money (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters).  It got a little harder to count when we threw those quarters in the mix.
  • Telling time to the hour and half hour
  • Measuring to the nearest inch and centimeter
  • Name Collection boxes (finding multiple ways to name a number)
  • Counting on a number grid
  • Comparing Numbers (greater than, less than, equal to)
I'm sure I am missing something!  We are hard workers everyday.  Stay tuned for a few pictures to show our learning in action!

Solids, Liquids, and Gases!

We started a new science unit this month.  We are studying the differences between solids, liquids, and gases.  Last week we explored different solid materials and discussed their different properties.  This week we built towers (or tried to build towers) out of the solid materials.  The kids had to think what properties each solid had and how to best use the materials.  They had fun building!
