OG (Orton Gillingham)

This year we are using the OG approach to teaching word work.  The kids have become great spellers this year! Second semester we started working on multi-syllable words.  We are also working on different spelling rules such as -tch vs -ch, -dge vs. g, ge, -ck vs. k and many others.  I am amazed at how fast they picked this up.

Flower Sale

The 2015 Carmel Elementary Flower Sale is in full swing! This is CE's largest fundraiser, a 30+ year tradition! We count on big proceeds from this sale to create new opportunities that directly benefit our students and our school. From Friday, March 6^th through Monday, March 23^rd, we will be collecting pre-orders and awarding daily prizes. Your student  received a packet of detailed information today.  Please check their green GO Folder. Be sure to look it over together. Please consider helping your child participate to not only reap the rewards, but to feel the pride that is associated with being part of this incredible tradition.

IMPORTANT DATES

Ok...get your calendars ready!  Here are a few things you might want to jot down:

• Spring Pictures will take place on Thursday, March 12th.  Picture envelopes were sent home earlier this week.  Please be sure to return the picture envelope and money by Thursday if you want your cute little boy or girl photographed.

• The end of the grading period is Friday, March 13th.  Report cards will be sent home electronically on Friday, March 20th.

• If you would like to order a summer math practice book, please return the order form and money by April 2nd.  Forms came home this week on yellow

• The entire 1st grade will be having their music concert on Thursday, April 30th.

Dr. Seuss Reader's Theater

This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss.  We read many books by Seuss and have been working on a reader's response booklet.  Today we did a Reader's Theater.  The kids have been practicing all week and worked very hard!  Enjoy their performances.

OG/Word Work

I am so pleased with the progress my kiddos are making this year with our new word work routine.   We have started working on multi-syllable words.  The kids are learning how to code words and read each syllable and the whole word.  You may see papers or packets referring to "rabbit" and "reptile" words coming home periodically.  Have your child read those words to you when they come home.  You will be amazed at some of the words your first grader can read independently.
