Happy Thanksgiving

I just wanted  to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!  If you are traveling, be safe.  I am thankful you share your kids with me each day.   I truly  have the best job!

Fun With our Buddies

Today we enjoyed some time with our 4th/5th grade buddies from Mrs. Hepp's class.  The kids made turkeys out of their hands and wrote the things they are thankful for!  Happy Thanksgiving!

“Fill My Plate” Canned Food Drive

The oldest Student Council tradition at CE is the Canned Food Drive.
The  canned food drive will began today and will end on Thursday, December 18th. We are asking each student and staff member to bring in 10 food items. We are asking you to bring in foods from all 5 food groups.
Information on www.chooseMyPlate.gov will give you information on how to fill a healthy plate. Let's see if we can be the winning class and bring in the most canned foods!

Good Readers "Infer"

We are working on inferring when we read.  Sometimes we get to "tricky" words and we have to infer the meaning of a word.  Today we read a poem called The Turkey Shot Out of the Oven by Jack Prelutsky.  We highlighted some of those "tricky" words and then the kids worked with a partner to try to determine the meaning of each of the words.  Take a look at these kids hard at work!

Brownie Point Party

Hooray!  We earned our last brownie point today!  Tomorrow each child is allowed to bring one stuffed animal from home.  One rule:  It must fit inside the backpack!

Getting Our Bodies Moving

Since it looks like we may be indoors quite a bit, we have been taking advantage of the indoor Fitness Trail in the back hallway.  We need to get our bodies moving.  Check us out doing planks, wall sits, mountain climbers and more.

The kids had a great time!

Recess

It looks like we could be in for a LONG winter!  Here are a few of our recess policies:
*We will usually go outside if the temperature is at least 20 degrees including the wind chill.
*If there is snow on the ground, kids need waterproof boots to play in the snow.  Otherwise they will need to stay on the plowed blacktop. (Remember to send a pair of shoes to change into).
*Please make sure your child comes to school each day prepared to go outside.  We check the temperature right before we go out in the afternoon.

Thanks for your help!

First Grade Authors

We have worked on a narrative writing unit for several weeks.   During our writer's workshop, we work on many skills.    I always tell the kids to check their sentences for "COPS" which stands for Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling.  It is just a quick reminder to check for those important parts of a sentence.  We worked on writing "small seed stories" instead of "watermelon stories."  For example, if a child goes to Disneyworld they want to write about their whole trip (the watermelon) which could take a very long time.  We tell them to focus in on one small detail (the seed) and really go into depth on that topic.  This is a hard concept for many 6 and 7 year olds but they have done a great job!  They chose one story they worked on throughout the unit and we took it through the publishing process.  They are so proud of their work.  I used an app on the ipad called Adobe Voice to let each child record their story for you.  It is taking a little while to get through the class.  If your child's story is not yet on the blog, it will be in the next few days.  Enjoy!
