First Grade Authors

We have worked on a narrative writing unit for several weeks.   During our writer's workshop, we work on many skills.    I always tell the kids to check their sentences for "COPS" which stands for Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling.  It is just a quick reminder to check for those important parts of a sentence.  We worked on writing "small seed stories" instead of "watermelon stories."  For example, if a child goes to Disneyworld they want to write about their whole trip (the watermelon) which could take a very long time.  We tell them to focus in on one small detail (the seed) and really go into depth on that topic.  This is a hard concept for many 6 and 7 year olds but they have done a great job!  They chose one story they worked on throughout the unit and we took it through the publishing process.  They are so proud of their work.  I used an app on the ipad called Adobe Voice to let each child record their story for you.  It is taking a little while to get through the class.  If your child's story is not yet on the blog, it will be in the next few days.  Enjoy!
