Friday Fun!

Our big question we are working on in shared reading is:  How do we get what we want?
Yesterday we read a story in social studies about popcorn and how it gets from the farm to our table.  Today we read The Popcorn Book by Tomie dePaola.  The kids recorded facts about popcorn on paper popcorn kernels.  They had to write at least four facts before they could get their bag of popcorn.  It is amazing how on task they were!  Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Time!

This week we are reading about pumpkins for an informational writing piece.  The kids worked in groups to create a group web of pumpkin facts.  We also had some fun with little baby pumpkins.  I have always carved a big pumpkin and used the little baby ones for decoration but I decided I wanted to see what was inside of those little pumpkins.  I had the kids make a prediction:  How many seeds are inside this little pumpkin?  We had guesses from 10-60.  ( A few said 100, but changed their mind).
The kids had fun cleaning out the pulp and seeds.  We had two little pumpkins.  One had 158 seeds and the other had 123 seeds!!!  I couldn't believe it.  I had some great helpers put those seeds in piles of 10 to help me count.

We had a great time on our fieldtrip yesterday!  The kids were very well behaved.

Wiggly Worms!

Well....I have to admit I am not a big fan of these slimy little creatures, but the kids LOVE this science unit.  Today we made a compost in a bin as part of our science unit on soils.  We have two bins, one with worms and one without worms. We added organic material to each bin.  We will observe the bins over a few weeks and make observations on what is happening.  Today, the worms arrived and the kids had a great time adding them to our bins.  Most were not afraid to touch the worms. Here are a few pictures from science this afternoon.
